We all know I am into cake porn.
Well this weekend emboldened by many pinterested cakes, I thought I would make a little something special for my friend Liz’s birthday.
I mean, my friend Anne made this guy:
“I don’t know if I should be depressed because it’s such a mess, or happy because of all of the bright colors”-Pete
WHERE DID I GO WRONG!! As soon as I started stacking the layers junk just fell apart. I feel like a sad leprechaun. Help me!

I would love to hear from you! Please leave a comment below!
Were your layers even? If not, you can level them using a bread knife. Also, were they fully cooled? Sometimes it helps to put them in the freezer for a little while before assembling. I had a cake melt into a disaster one July day. I dumped the whole thing into a big glass bowl, added more icing on top and called it a trifle.
this made me smile! Im still it was still delicious!
This is too funny – I think we have all been there at some point! I hope it still tasted good!
Oh no!! It looks like maybe the layers weren’t firm enough and perhaps some of the lower layers weren’t level. I really hope you ate it anyway
Glad to have you back on the blog again!!
Honestly, your cake looks amazing. I’m with Pete-the bright pink cake makes me super duper happy!
There are a couple of things that probably went wrong. You need to make sure all the layers are flat and level – professionals use a level to make absolutely sure – especially with a lot of layers. Your cake layers may not have cooled enough before you started stacking and they may have been too moist as well. Also, looks like you used too much frosting in between layers, that could have caused everything to come apart in the end. it sure is pretty tho! I love the colors! The trifle idea from another commenter is brilliant in a cake emergency! I look forward to the second try!

Nailed it
So glad to have you back. It definitely looks like your layers weren’t cooled enough. Also- it looks like globs of frosting in between instead of thinly spread. And then if you want to get technical – maybe your cake was too moist hence the easy breakage. However, it is an incredibly happy mess and I’m sure it tasted amazing!
Hmm… Looks like you’ve got plenty of cake advice for next time. If you stirred that cake frosting mixture up you’ve got the beginnings of a ‘cake pop’/'cake ball’ recipe, which seem to be very popular on the internets right now… Not sure what color yours would turn out though.
I give this an A for effort!!
I’m sorry for your disappointment but comforted by the fact that I’m not the only one who is bakery challenged. In my case, I’m pretty sure I’m just plain handicapped.
Pete’s comment is hilarious – sad your cake fell apart!
Hi Bailey,
Cooling the cakes is the answer!!You can even put them in the freezer if you are in a hurry. Also, put them back in the refrigerator or freezer when you ice a layer.
cake is cake.
that mess looks delicious.
lets be best friends.
apparently i only speak in haiku.
We all have dessert disasters… although I am no expert I recently made 5 layers of cake and peppermint cheesecake from Southern Living, and it had me put the layers in the freezer before I assembled the cake. In the end it started to fall when we cut it, but it looked awesome when it was presented!
Bailey,
I think you knocked it out of the park! WHAPAM! Seriously, I am proud of you for trying this. You most def. get an A for effort. And, I bet it still tasted grrrrrreeeeaaaatttt!!
PS. We just bought a life sized sheep stuffed animal at from HABA. Can’t wait for him to arrive. Gracie might need one for her room! Check them out!
whoops…
I meant Hansa. Anyways, the sheep is adorable, and we can’t wait for his arrival.
I literally just laughed out loud. Bless your heart. It turned out better than mine would.
Oh my! I just showed this to The Boy and we had a great (loving!) chuckle. It reminds me of the time I made a tiered coconut cream cake that looked for all the world like Machu Picchu in Bizarro World. With coconut. ‘Twas a hot mess, but delish!
Btw, did you use a boxed cake? They are the ruin of beautiful layers.
Oh no!!! hahahahaha I totally know how you feel. I did that twice – once with a chocolate cake for my sister-in-law and another with a red velvet cake. You have to have ONE bad experience. Try it again and I’m sure it will come out much better. I think you got the coloring just right though! The bright colors look perfect. You are too funny.
Wow that looks like fun! I think I’ll have to try this for an upcoming first birthday, but after seeing your erm success or lack of it, I think a test run is definitely in order! – Cathy Pieroz at Ray White Alexandra Hills
What a bloody mess. It’s SO bad, it’s cool. Only you could pull that one off – congrats!
I think it is perfect!
omg, your cake is amazing. it made me laugh so hard I cried and I am so grateful that you and your blog exist.
thank you for making my day more times then you’ll ever know. you rock. hard.
Late comment, I know, but this post made me laugh so much! And I had to share it with several other people, who also found it super funnny! I know if I were to attempt anything so adventurous in the kitchen it would end up similarly disastrous, if not worse, and so I love that you tried and were willing to share the results with us! And I do like the cupcake versions that followed
