…I actually do know my way around a DIY project it turns out.
Well, when I have my hand held by Jenny.
But still!
Remember that china cabinet?
Well it is going to these clients.
And I went to town on it for the better part of last week.
Firstly, driving it home was not safe. Tailgate open. One tiny piece of twine. Livin’ on the edge.
Then, I sanded, taped off the glass, removed the hardware, and primed.
I let that dry…or if you are fancy “cure” for 24 hours and then went in with a coat of Benjamin Moore icey blue in high gloss on the inside.
And Tarrytown Green in high gloss on the outside.
I let the first coat dry for 24 hours, and then went back in and did a second coat on the inside and let it dry for a day.

Then a second coat on the outside and let it dry for a full day. I did the inside and outside on separate days so that I could get the lines where the blue and green meet really clean.
Things I learned: After I removed the painters tape I had to clean up some paint that got on the glass with a razor blade. I might have removed the doors. It would have made it easier, but the hinges looked a little wonky and I was intimidated. If you are going to do a foam roller, you need the super high quality dense kind. The others are garbo. Oil paint you don’t want to overwork…but regulah old paint? Werk it. I thought I had specified oil, but after a full day of painting in a hazmat mask I realized, no stench…checked the cans…not oil. Dumb. Dumb. Dodo.
I went to town on the brass pulls with decent results, and overall, I think it be lookin’ real good.
I am not going to lie, it was a lot of work. A few hours a day, for about 5 days. But SO satisfying.
Any of you have some redos you wanna share? Furniture painting tips?

Beautiful. So daunting (in my mind, at first) but what an amazing end product!!! Love it.
It’s gorgeous! I love the colors you chose!
One question: Did you have any problem with the doors or drawers sticking? I tried painting an old china cabinet once, except the doors were already really tight so the extra paint made them jam. And when I yanked them open, some of the paint came off. Sad, sad, sad after many days/hours of work. An emotional set back that I wasn’t prepared for, which is probably why the piece still sits in storage 2 years later …
Love it! did you use a brush or a foam roller? Which one? I did a paint job last month and it turned out ok… not great so would love to know what you used!
Beautiful. The key is the high gloss paint. I did it with semi gloss and the effect is not as pretty. Love the blue inside.
That looks great! I love fixing up old furniture but am def. still learning so no great tips to share.
It looks AMAZING!!! I know what a project like entails…tons of work but soooo worth it. Adore the icy blue with rich/lacquered green.
Hey Bailey, I’m a regular reader of an unhealthy amount of design blogs and if you don’t know of her already, you need to check out Clementine & Olive (http://clementineandolive.blogspot.com/). This girl, I believe her name is Erin, is the handiest person I (don’t) know. She manages to be a single mom of twins and intimidates me with her DIY posts. Definitely check her out – she even does DIY tutorials.
Your hardwork paid off, it looks great!! Love the color combo!
Helena- I used a 2 3/4 angled purdy brush. I used the smaller purdy push for the details. I think a dense high quality foam roller would have been better!
Catharine- I didn’t, BUT I made sure to sand down the underside of drawers and doors to create a little more space for the paint so as not to stick.
Love it and love the color choices. I’ve painted furniture but never seemed to use the right paint — love the tips.
Gorg!!!!!!! Love the color! So you to pick a shade that is classic and offbeat. Fantastic job!
Lovin the color combo. You should be so proud of yourself Bailey, and now you know you can do it. Looks fantastic!
Turned out amazing! I have a few items around my home that i purchased to paint and still just haven’t gotten around to it, it sounds like a lot of work but your results remind me it’s totally worth it!
Totally impressed! Love the color combo. I have always been nervous about high gloss, but your results have swayed me. I need to get off me arse and finish some much needed procrastination laden projects!

Awesomeness. Love that the name of the green gloss is Tarrytown – you pick colors with meaning, don’t you?
Well done, milady, well done.
Love that green! The whole project looks killer – thanks for the tips!
Ok… You’ve made me brave. Im going to do a pair of nightstands today. I have always been too intimidated to paint furniture. Until today! Your project looks amazing and I want it in my family room!!!
Oh girl – it looks awesome. The high gloss really makes it pop and so does that icey blue paint color. Just gorgeous.
