The master bedroom is the only room we really redecorated from scratch. This was our old master situation in Chicago, which I loved, but I definitely wanted a change for this house. First of all, this master is like almost thricely the size of the Chicago room. Also, the new owners of Chicago wanted the canopy, and I was able to sell the old headboard to a client. Time for a fresh start!
As I mentioned yesterday, this space was previously a fourth bedroom cut off from the rest of the house accessed either by walking through the master bedroom, or from a staircase in the kitchen. We took out the staircase and made it into my office downstairs, and into Pete’s bathroom and closet upstairs. We moved the wall that separated the room from the old master back 5 feet extending the existing closet and bathroom, which became mine!
A visual would probably be helpful.

Well…That’s all folks! I will eventually get my act together on some of the outdoor changes, but I need a bit of a break from all this oversharing! Thanks so much for all of your sweet comments, if you have any questions on our bedroom leave them here and I will try to answer them as best I can!
The biggest project upstairs in this house was reconfiguring the bizarre master and 4th bedroom layout. I think multiple add ons resulted in a master bedroom that later became a walk through to a 4th bedroom. Check out my ghetto drawing to demonstrate.
That just didn’t make no kind of sense to us. Why would you want your chillens running through your bedroom to see their siblings, and why would you want one poor lonely child isolated from their brethren in the back of the house? I mean, maybe if they were super naughty, but still. So we decided to put up a wall and create a proper hallway to access the 4th bedroom in the back of the house, the new wall would create a much smaller bedroom which would be Gracie’s room, and we would make the 4th bedroom into the new master.
Make sense?
Hows about a visual.
Gracie’s Bedroom
Before
After, That door in the before picture where you can see the texas flag is the same door in this picture, which now leads to our master bedroom.
Before, looking back towards to stairway. That doorway to the right led to their master closet which was a giant “L” shaped walk in. We turned part of that “L” into a bathroom for Gracie, and made the rest her closet.

THE BUBBY!!!!!!!!
Sweets for my sweet.
Daybed that will eventually be her big girl bed, towers by Furbish
Towers are filled with my favorite childhood toys, and presents from our best friends and family.
Some precious items for my precious girl. My childhood Madeline books, a Madame Alexander Madeline doll, and Eiffel tower by Oeuf.
K, Leave ‘em questions. Tomorrow might be our last day with the master, unless I can scrounge up some outdoor pics.
The two bedrooms above the living and dining rooms were also original to the house, and didn’t need too much work, just some de-built-in-ing, paint etc. Or so we thought…Once we got into the projects we realized that both bathrooms had water damage, so what was initially going to be just a little TLC to the vintage tile became full on renovations of both bathrooms. If you want to see how our stuff transitioned from our Chicago house to here, these bedrooms and baths used a lot of the same elements from our 3rd floor guest bed, and kids bedroom in Chicago.
Turquoise Guest Room
Before: This room is huge, I am thinking it might have been the original master…
After: I love this room because it is essentially the same design elements from my living room in college (which you can see in my portfolio here). Similar wall color, we reused the curtains, the rug, the light fixture and the art…My taste has evolved over the years, but I think when you invest in pieces you really love, you can reuse them forever.
…The bed is done up in the bedding from the third floor guest bedroom from our Chicago house, the only new things in this room are the lamps and the bed from Ballard. Everything else are things I have been collecting for years.
This tree of life statue was a gift from Pete in college. It is made out of a single piece of clay and depicts the story of Adam&Eve. Such a special piece.
Before…Maybe it’s a boy thing, but these people sure loved their built ins.

Before: The bathroom was really not offensive, the tile was in good condition and had it not been for the water damage I definitely could have worked with the situation.
But I mean…I am kind of glad for it too because yowza. That is chartreuse glass subway tile, and then simple white penny rounds on the floor in dark brown grout. We also replaced the single pedestal sink because this will likely be a shared bedroom one day and this fixture is a lot more practical.
…And looking back toward the bedroom
Starry Starry Night Guest Room
Before: This room had the funkiest layout before. And, of course, more built ins. It has a lot of great windows, which made it less scary to go for it with the hague blue and wallpaper ceiling, but made it a little tricky to place a bed.
After: Putting the bed in the window bay really opened up the room. We used the Anthropologie curtains on the windows, and had them made into blinds for the bay. The rug is Jonathan Adler and was in a guest bedroom in Chicago, the bed was in the 3rd floor bedroom in Chicago, and the bedding was Pete’s from his bachelor pad after college.
…Gah I love that ceiling. Ralph Lauren constellation wallpaper that glows in the dark. It’s magic.

And that ceiling.
Before: Not the best use of space, but I do love the framed art so cute
After: Prints are from Mecox. The vanity was in our master in Chicago. This will probably be the next baby room, boy or girl, and I am happy we didn’t have to buy anything new to make it work in the meantime.

Before: Again, nothing fabulous about the before situation, but I certainly could have worked with it. Regrouting, some fun wallpaper.
After: But again, I am kind of glad we had to go ahead and really address the situation. I took an idea that started in our Chicago guest bath, we had a ton of extra wallpaper and I loved getting to reuse it since I love it so much and we barely got to enjoy it in Chicago.
…and again. Funny story about the tile in the tub surround. By the time they got to doing the tile work I was on bed rest and couldn’t come up to oversee progress. This tile was supposed to be installed tweaked 45degrees, like quatrefoil. I was SUPER annoyed initially, but now I kind of love it. It reminds me of puffy clouds!
OK, as always I will try to answer any questions left in the comments at the end of the day. Tomorrow is Gracie’s bed/bath/closet which was a major renovation, creating the space out of what was the master bedroom. Then Wednesday we will finish up with our Master!
