According to Facebook and Instagram, everyone in the world had THE best 4th of July weekend. I am so pleased! You could probably tell by the lack of action over here that we had a good one as well. Continuing our summer of non-stop traveling, we were in Chicago visiting Pete’s family.
Grace loved the parade in Pete’s town (despite her mean muggin’ here).
And superloved the fireworks. Wonderous!
But now I am back at work with a huge client install this month and a big photoshoot this week.
I have noticed lately in my decorating that my tastes are subtly evolving, I am not sure what direction things are going in, but I can sense a change in the air. Even so, there are certain fabrics I have used in client spaces and my own homes in the past that will stay heavy in my rotation.
Fig leaf has been trending of late, but it was too perfect for our glossy green kitchen to ignore, so I jumped on that bandwagon and now I just want to use it everywhere. Green being my favorite color, I also love the pops of turquoise in there.
We just installed Les Touches in Pink in our bedroom (I will show you as soon as I can) and am also using it in brown in a clients space. This print is so versatile, the pattern itself is fun and funky but still somewhat classic. I have a feeling this will be a star for awhile.
Nothing is more in my wheelhouse than a printed velvet. I can’t get enough of the tension between the masculine print and pops of hot pink with the olive green. It is just so good. We just installed shades in our den, and I am also using it in a client project. This fabric would be just as good in a nursery or a man room. I think I’ll be using it for awhile.
It is madness to me that I had never used these Brunschwig Zebras in my life until our Holly project. I am now also putting them in our guest room and am always pitching it to clients.
This fabric is not very photogenic. But it is seriously one of the most incredible fabrics I have ever seen. Like most Clarence House fabrics it is classic and old-school, but still totally funky and fabulous. The colors in it are perfection against the brassy caramel. It is a bit $$, but effective in small doses.
China rose. I could use in every colorway in any room. A lot of designers start designing a room around a rug, or a piece of art, I repeatedly find myself working from fabrics. Some of my most unexpected but successful color combinations come from pulling out colors that work together in a fabric. Scalamandre China Rose is so fun to work with because it has so many colors and tones, as the inspiration for a whole room, things could go in any direction.
This printed velvet changed my whole game in Chicago. My last major design evolution happened in the midst of designing our Chicago house, where I went from wanting the brightest colors possible everywhere and always, to understanding a bit more about the value of a neutral or a granny moment to let other elements pop. Originally I had planned to paint these vintage wing backs white and upholster them in some balls out stripe, but then fell in love with this fabric. I have toyed with reupholstering these chairs over the years, but finally realized I probably never will. This fabric was made for them. They have become one of my signature pieces that I get asked about the most often.
I have used this cut velvet so many places. In pink as living room chairs in college, white for pillows in the living room in Chicago, turquoise for Grace’s gliders. It comes in 23 bright amazing colors, has great texture, and I love the balance between the plush velvet and nubby linen.
I cannot get away from this print. I first fell in love with it on Cynthia Rowley’s dining chairs in one of the great all-time spreads (IMHO) from Elle Decor I believe. I remember looking through fabrics one day in Chicago and stumbling across this panel and it was literally like a celebrity sighting. I’m a nerd, but I pulled every colorway and couldn’t wait to use it in my own home. I used it in Austin for our own dining chairs, and in demonstrating how I pull random color combos from a fabric, I pulled the yellow on our dining chairs and coral in our china cabinets from this one. Since then I have used it in countless projects, as both a wallpaper and fabric. Like China Rose, the colors in the print are so diverse and easy to work with.
And velvet. Glorious velvet. I don’t think there is a room I have designed without a spot of velvet. It is actually a challenge for me to incorporate other textiles in a space, because when velvet exists, what is the point? One of my favorite velvets is F.Schumacher Gainsborough. It comes in literally hundreds of colors, isn’t bad on the $$ for velvet, and has proven to be a durable pick.
There are so many other fabrics I love. They are my biggest source of inspiration, and I actually don’t love reusing prints- even my favorites- because I always want to use new favorites. But these 10 have done me right in the past and will probably continue to show up in my work.
