Babies

Baby Stuff 1 year+

Thanks for the feedback Friday, I hear ya. SO we are going to get back to the old days with a Baby Stuff post. I cannot believe that y’all would want baby advice from the mother of a child with a broken baby leg, but  I am happy you do. I haven’t done one of these since March which was 5-7 months. And I can’t really tell you what happened between then and now, in life or in baby stuff. But that’s ok, most baby stuff is just for parents to create the illusion of control, methinks. Illusion or not, feeling like you know what you are doing as a parent because you have the right sippy cup? I totally get it. So here are the things that have been working for us lately.

At 1 year we ditched the bottle. Which made me really sad at first, it seemed like such a big step away from babyhood. I had anxiety about it, and if Gracie would miss it. But she did not care at all. I tried weaning her, but she decided after a day she was just over it and it was sippy cups for life.

This is our favorite. Although sometimes it kind of gets a weird pressure issue and leaks? But it is sturdy, the weighted straw dangle thingy means it is good to the last drop.

I am not sure if I mentioned this one before, but she loved these eggs at like 6 months and still loves them.

Also this peculiar toy we were gifted around 6 months. You program it with your childs name and supposed favorite thing and he sings about them.

She loved it then, and is still obsessed with it. And it always freaks people out when Gracie’s toy calls her by her given name. Which is fun.

This one might blow your mind.

But a ball. A good, old fashioned ball. Gracie loves the dogs tennis balls which is disgusting. But any bouncy ball blows her mind.

This one is another kind of fancy and expensive “toy”.

Go to target. Or walmart. Or the dollar store. And procure yourself a large plastic pitcher with some sort of top.

Give pitcher to your child.

Watch as they put it on their head and crawl around. Hillarious.

Put all of their toys in it and shake it like a morocca. Hillarious. Turn it upside down and place pony gently atop it. Hillarious. You get the idea.

The best real presents Grace received were a few 1st Birthday gifts.

From her mommy and daddy. Classic. And she is legit obsessed. She likes to push it. Sit and have a quiet, reflective moment in it. Put her toys in and out of it. This was one of those few gifts that I built up in my mind to be so amazing that actually delivered.

This shopping cart…

She was given a few push toys and for some reason only had time for this one.

She likes to ride in it too.

As a rule I think electronic toys are kind of garbage. With the exception of this which saved our lives from 1-8 months. And the dog above. But otherwise, once they figure out the trick, babies are kind of over the electronics. Or at least mine is. The things that have been the most long term crowd pleasers have been things like blocks, balls etc. When she was brand new she would grab them, then chew on them, then stack them, throw them, and now she likes to put them away and dump them out. BUT this toy that her best friend Mary gave her for her 1st Birthday has been unexpectedly mind blowing.

It drives when you push a button and sings Old Macdonald, and then the animals make their animal sounds when you put them in their proper spot. I don’t know why, but she has been playing with this one non stop through several battery changes for months now and her enjoyment has not dampened.

This is one of the few designy-cute toys that she actually likes.

Howdy!

Look at what a dork Gracie is playing with her TI-83. Nerd alert! :)

That, and her jellycat bunny. All jellycat stuffed animals rule. Designy-cute, super soft, and babies love them. We have them at Biscuit, for sale online soon, but bunny is her favorite.

Bffs.

And finally…Never underestimate the power of Elmo.

We almost had a situation on our hands when this precious baby showed up as Elmo on Halloween in our music class.

Our iPad is stocked full of Elmo’s World, and our iPad holder has a kick stand so it can rest up on its own. This set up allows us to have family dinners out of the house on an occasion. And yes, I realize that a few paragraphs back I said I did not favor electronic toys, but I also clearly am full of grah-doo. The rules are, there ain’t no rules, Kennickie!

So that’s the “stuff” from let’s say 10-15 months? We are now contemplating Christmas. Anything I left on this list we should know about? Any Christmas ideas?

Comment, and ye shall receive. We have a few design posts this week coming up, some gift guides soon, maybe even a giveaway? Peppermint Bliss is BACK!

This is kind of decorating…

I am so overwhelmed right now with getting everything ready for the brand and the store, and redoing our new house, and adjusting to my new ‘do (kidding, about that part). I haven’t really had time for my design work (thus the intern hiring, clients, I’m getting to you!). But this is kind of design work…I guess.

So we are back living at my Moms while we wait for our house to get finished. We are in the garage apartment where we brought Gracie home from the hospital and lived for a few months before we moved to Austin. And it is a garage apartment but it is fluffy, Gracie has her own bedroom, but it is still a garage apartment and we are tight on the space. The living area is all open to itself, so adding Gracie playroom functionality into kitchen/dining/office/living…It wasn’t working.

But Gracie’s bedroom used to be a guest room that we shoved a crib into, so I was a bit flummoxed on where to fit in Gracie play space.

But then we just decided eff it, we’ll store the bed in the garage, and use that space for her play area.

So before above…

And after!

I bought the floors tiles, the Ikea Expedit shelves I had in my old office and were in storage. The toys are Gracie’s…duh.

But please just BASK in the organization.

And it is SO much better, because most of this stuff was shoved into these big ol bins (below), but she couldn’t see it.

She plays so much more enthusiastically now that she can see her playthings.

I am not going to lie, it has been super gratifying getting to do our past two homes, but this little space might have been the most gratifying “decorating” I have ever done.

Gracie especially loves turning on her music dog…

…And then directing me to sing along with it.

The best part? She finds all of this enriching play time positively exhausting, and nap time is long. And I can work. And then when she wakes up we are both ready to play again!

Help me, Please?

Do you know what you are looking at below?

Besides a baby dressed adorably in a faux fur vest?

The last documented picture of my child wearing shoes.

And as you will notice, she wasn’t quite sturdy in her person yet, so was really in no position to argue about foot ware.

Well, she is now. And like many things in her short little lifetime, she has a strong opinion about shoes.

And she is anti.

Stupid Mommy, feet go in MOUTHS, not in shoes…

It is my fault, really. All of these books said not to constrict her little feet with shoes because it hinders early walking, and I had big dreams of baby athleticism, but here we are at 12+ months, and no walking, and no shoes.

Having some ladies time with her Aunt Cait, sans shoes

Which would be fine with me, really. I mean who doesn’t like the baby Huck Finn look? If any of you say baby Britney Spears I will murder you.

On the town with Daddy for the Fourth, no shoes.

‘Cept the thing is, she is on the verge of walking.

Crushing this young boys spirit/getting bossy at the gym daycare, no zapatos.

Which I can’t wait for because she is on the move and even if it means having to run after her for the rest of my days, it is better than holding a child trying to defy you with all 24 pounds of her surprisingly strong body because she wants to crawl around on the floor at the aquarium.

Me giving in and finally letting her bare feet touch the aquarium floor. I am so ashamed. But she was so happy!

Problem is, when I put shoes on her, if she physically can, she will rip them off immediately and throw them. If I put on a few pairs of magic gladiator esque shoes that will not come off, she sits there and looks at me like ‘what have you done, these things are obviously useless to me now’, like I just cast her feet in lead.

Cruising the streets of Chicago, rain gear on, shoes off. And I actually super tried this day, but she kicked her shoe literally into a gutter to be lost forever.

Are there any magic shoes out there that stay on, and that babies like? I don’t even care if they are cute at this point. Chick needs some foot gear.

Help me?

Thank You!!

For all of the present suggestions and Birthday wishes!
Gracie had a fantastic birthday.

In fact, she has been thoroughly enjoying her time in Chicago overall.

For her Birthday we took her to the Lincoln Park Zoo, and then to our favorite bakery in the WORLD Sweet Mandy B’s and let her go to town on some cake.

She legit freaked out over chocolate. Spazz attack. It was hilarious and amazing.

Then we let her play all afternoon in nuffin ‘cept her skivvies. Little girl prefers to be in lebuff. I prefer it too, honestly, but Daddy doesn’t approve. For dinner we went to Gemini Bistro and Gracie enjoyed fries, mac and cheese, and some more cake. Not a vegetable in sight. But that’s ok, it was her birthday!

She was not such a fan of the cheese cake, but she made out of dinner with a balloon which was pretty much everything in her book.

But then this morning she woke up a big girl and didn’t want no mo hugs from her mommy and daddy.

Jus kiddin, it was probably just the post birthday blues.

Other things we have been doing with our time in Chicago?

Aquarium.

Beach.

Lots of long walks… We went and knocked on the door of Clifford, The Big Red House and got to meet the new owners. And we took a tour of the house. Yes I am shameless. I had to make sure it was in good hands! And it is, the new family is SO sweet and while they have made some changes to make it more them, a lot of the big (wonderful) things are the same and it was good closure to see someone happy in that home. And they have a brand new baby! It’s like they picked up where we had to leave off, it all felt very meant to be.We have had picnics in the park. Chicago is pretty.

Cubs game…

Where we only lasted 2 innings. Notice how pleased Pete looks about that. Tip, if you are taking a baby/child to Wrigley it is probably better to sit along the cubs dugout side, the visitors side is in direct sunlight and Gracie couldn’t take the heat so we got out of the kitchen.

We have had a great time catching up with friends&fam here but I am ready to head back to Texas and back to real life. Thank you again for all of the birthday wishes, we had so much fun imagining what Gracie’s perfect day would be and making that happen, I can’t wait until she can tell us what her birthday bliss is.

And because you are all so lovely, imma tell you my secrets Monday and Tuesday next week! Yes. They are that large that I think they each deserve their own day. I’m excited to not have to be so sneaky with you guys!

See you all here Monday morning.

K?

Gracie Girl

It has been one year.

I have very few words to describe it. Our hearts are truly full of Grace. Full of her beauty, full of the hope she represents for us, full of the reminder of the mercy and miracle we experienced.

And because she brings us so much joy, and I know so many of y’all helped get us here with your support and prayers and advice and positivity, here is a little highlight reel of our first year with Grace. I hope it brings you a bit of joy too.

Happy First Birthday, goofy Gracie girl, we love you so much!
