Bet y’all didn’t know I have been in New York for the past two days.
I’m sneaky like that.
Pete had a meeting in New York, and with Biscuit closed for the week, Grace and I decided to join him.
The store in complete disarray, gotta break it down and put it back together better than before. My girl and I heading to NYC, hands full of cookies, no problems.
We got in late, fed Grace and put her to bed before heading out on a hot date while a friend from college watched Grace.
Notice my Carolina K dress? Love it.
Yesterday we walked all around this town. Enjoying the most glorious of all spring days.
We checked out beautiful shops…
Took Grace to the Childrens Art Museum.
Which Grace loved…Thanks for the tip Caitlin.
Then last night we got to go to a dinner at The James Beard house honoring/showcasing our favorites/friends from Boka in Chicago.
Giuseppe and his team doing their thing.
I was really digging this color combination, and thought we should probably go exploring.
I told you, we’re sneaky.
Now we are heading home after a quick 36 hours.
And I am delighted to know that this is the kind of action I will be returning to at Biscuit.
Ordering a salad usually makes me want to cry. It is just so depressing. But this salad inspired by Houston Restaurant RDG is legitimately one of my favorite dishes ever.
1. Mix together olive oil and lime juice. Depending on the juiciness of your lime, I find have a lime’s worth of juice and 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil is a good mix. About a 2:1 tablespoon mix.
2. Grate about half a cup of cotija cheese, toss together salad cheese and dressing, adding the cheese one tablespoon at a time until you reach desired deliciousness. Obviously, the less cheese you can use and be happy the healthier this recipe is. But the recipe is all about the avocado, so is definitely not “diet”.
3. Slice the avocado into thinnish planed slices and remove peel. Season with a bit of olive oil and a wee bit of salt. Pan-Seer, about 1-2 minutes on each side.
4. Thinly slice some serranno pepper, and plate with salad and avocado.
5. Feel smug about being so pure and healthy that you voluntarily eat salad.
**This picture of my girl from our shoot makes me hopeful**
So does this:
“But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out….This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.
But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.
So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”
Words cannot express my love. They are two of my favorite humans in the universe. And definitely two of Grace’s favorite humans in the universe. They are BabyWhisperer’s, and DogWhisperer’s, and BaileyWhisperer’s. I really don’t know how to describe these two. They are two of the most real, complex, and appealing people I have ever known. Grace and I cried at the door for a bit after they left…But after I shook us both by the shoulders and said WE NEED TO GET A GRIP!!!!
I felt SO ENERGIZED by our time together.
Ready to take on this week. Which includes closing the store while we add some displays/storage, wallpaper, build some must needed storage in the office…The online store will still be running, but like everything else around these parts, Biscuit is getting a wondrous makeover. Can’t wait to show y’all.
This contest might be my favorite thing we have done with Biscuit yet, I am LOVING seeing your cute puppies and babies and how y’all styled your beds. I’m glad y’all have to vote on the winner, because I don’t think I could choose.
Remember, $200 for your favorite, $100 for a voter, and lot’s of pictures of beautiful Biscuits.
Today I am posting over at Camille Styles on my entertaining style.
You may remember Grace helping us with the shoot #bossy
Caroline, Maddie and I had a lot of fun (read: felt ill the next day) doing it- so check it out. Lots of food porn and recipe inspiration.
Speaking of the kitchen.
As y’all know, I have been trying to finish up all of the remaining projects at our house. Mostly that just means getting curtains/rugs/pillows- small finishing touches. Except in our kitchen & entry hall.
Our entry hall has never been quite right. The desk was the same one we had in Chicago and Austin, and I am kind of sentimental about things like that. So I didn’t want to get rid of it, but it was too deep for the space- just barely missing the door when it swings open. It was not wide enough, and didn’t provide us enough surface area to catch all of our comings and goings, then leaving too much dead space on either side we didn’t know what to do with.
And the kitchen, while taking out the double ovens opened up the space by the window and improved the flow of the kitchen, things just felt incomplete.
These two inadequacies of our home have plagued me. Weighing heavy on my heart.
AND THEN!
Just like that. Divine intervention.
We are closing the store next week to add some displays, change out the furniture, wallpaper etc. and this stunner console won’t fit on the floor anymore:
So I decided to take him home with me. Hims will be perfect in the entry hall. 8 inches narrower than the desk, and will run the width of the space leaving just enough room for our coat rack and umbrella stand on either side. This addition inspired a whole slew of positive changes in there that I will show once it comes together.
BUT then, my beloved desk was homeless…
Until:Now, my poor iPhone photography doesn’t properly capture the change, but let me assure you, it MAKES the space.
I cannot tell you how many arguments Pete and I have gotten in over him leaving mail and the contents of his pockets on my island.
#oldmarriedproblems
Finally we have a place to process the business of life that always ends up in the kitchen. And the dog bowls are tucked away, but they can still access them.
The colors work perfectly, and I love my topiaries I got from Mackenzie in here. We still need curtains and to recover the bench seat- and I am thinking a new light fixture as well- but the desk is giving me so much peace of mind.
And hope for the future. Hope that looks like this:
